Winter in Hainan
by Dyrathror on Feb.24, 2009, under Around the World, China
Hainan is the southmost province of China and lies at the same height as Vietnam. A tropical region you could say an no one built heatings into houses and appartments.
Last winter was my first to live in Haikou and I can tell you that never in my life I had it this cold before.
First of all naturally I was not really prepared for a “winter” on an tropical island. All my wintercloths are still in Europe. We had temperatures around 6°-8°C. Now you may think “hey what is this guy complaining about?” but please take into account that the outer temperature equals more or less to the temperature in my appartment! The cold really creeps into your body step by step … some days I spent more or less in my bed, the only warm place
This was before the chinese Spring Festival a month ago.
During the last day we had 34°C. A real change from winter to sommer within 4 week.

i only can tell you, in my hometown, we don’t have any heating at all, and the temperature differs from -4°C to 38°C. and the temperature will be around 10°C for at least 4 months, and don’t forget this: there is still one to two months the temperature is below 10°C.
hehe

Hi Dyrathror,
Rumour has it that winter in Hainan should be between 16-25 degrees. Therefore my girlfriend and I are planning to go there for a short vacation in March/April. Probably to try diving and surfing.
You being the source of information (since you are living there:) please let me know how it really is.
Is the weather ok?
When would be a good time to go to avoid millions of tourist -and peak-prices?
Any recomondations for diving, surfing and maybe hotels?
Thanks in advance and I hope you are having a good time down there!
The best wishes,
Bruno

Hi Bruno,
I think March and especially April are becoming warmer again and are the best season for traveling to Hainan.
Last winter in Hainan has been very cold with temperatures of 12°C during daytime and down to 5°C at night. Not really cosy. And I would not suggest to come to Hainan at the end of the summer. Beginning with July it becomes not only hot but also the humidity rises that much that you can hardly breath if you are not used to this kind of weather. And after this the Taifun season starts
For traveling I can only suggest you go either to Sanya in the south or to the east coast which has very beautiful spots too. I cannot recommend any Hotel, sorry. The chinese don’t have that many days free during the year so you can expect them to travel around the chinese national holidays, especially during the first week of the year, in February around the Spring Festival, around the Labour day in begin of March and in October.

Hi Dyrathror,
Thanks a lot! Very nice to get info from one of the locals :0)
I understand that in the national holiday the place wil be visited a lot and one should avoid going there at these holidays.
By the beginning of March you mean Tomb Sweeping holiday?
